SLHS1914: Communication Disorders and Neurodiversity: An Ongoing Dialogue

This discussion-based Freshman seminar examines societal perceptions of communication disorders resulting from developmental and acquired causes, including Autism, Aphasia, Motor Speech Disorders, Stuttering, Traumatic Brain Injury, Hearing Impairments, and Voice disorders through group discussions and lectures. Topics for discussion include the evolution and utility of frameworks to understand disabilities and barriers, ableism, neurodiversity, intersectionality, disability policies and accommodations, role of stakeholders. Through each topics, students will gain perspective on the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities and identify characteristics of responsible stakeholders. Instructor-based lectures will be augmented by discussions facilitated by students, guest lectures from topic experts, written assignments, and group projects.
